Did you know that the prime mover of our economy right now are the BPOs and our OFWs? While other countries export electronics, oil, raw materials, and food; we, on the other hand, export people and labor.
Yes, we do have the export processing zones but we don't own the products there. These multinational companies only come here because of our cheap labor.
They really liked our laborers: quiet and non-complaining workers--ready to work like horses for a minimum pay that can only afford to buy noodles, sardines, and rice (ever wonder why there's a boom in the noodle and sardines industry?)
These multinationals also prefer women laborers for the obvious reason that women, generally, are not the main breadwinners in the family--they are ready to accept the lowest pay and the last to complain.
I recently came across a guy named Norman Bang. This is what he's got to say about our pathetic economy:

I see that every one is selling the same damn thing. I feel like I'm in Thailand again.
Find something original to make, or sell.
Get away from the 3rd world thinking.
Separate yourself from the other man.
Find what you do best, then build on that to make yourself better and someday you can hire employees.
2ND thing, Don't be discriminative.
If you see an older person that has a talent you can use, employ them.
The biggest thing I see is that employers want ONLY young girls.
Fuck that, Use your head and employ Simone that can do the job. Man, woman, old, young, Degree or not!
This is why America has significantly less unemployed than Asia. All can work, No age, race, or gender discrimination.
I could change this country with in 4 yrs.

I found his views interesting, so I replied:

Hi Norman...
This is very informative...
And I very well agree with you.
But what do we do best?

Let's see....
Right now I can only think of furniture making (not doing well these days),
Right now I can only think of furniture making (not doing well these days),
exotic decorations manufacturing (not doing well these days),
hospitality business (this is dominated by the international names like Hilton, Marriot, etc),
our minerals (yeah this part is taken care by foreigners as well),
agriculture (this is dominated by the likes of DOLE and DEL MONTE--typical companies who only give 3 dollars a day for labor)... what else?
Which fields or industries do you think we can do well?
You mentioned you can change this country in 4 years time. How will you do it?

First, Stop the discrimination.
Let every one work.
